The setting is the twenties and thirties of the 20th century in Hollywood. Billy Haines, hardly making a living from accompanying women to dinner, is engaged by MGM Studios as a film actor. His first films are not a success which eventually comes when the actress Joan Crawford encourages Billy to re invent himself as Billy, the wisecracker, the freshest punk that ever drew breath.
Meanwhile Billy meets Jimmy and falls in love with him. The two move together and for some time this is no problem. With the stock market crash in 1929 and a sharp change in people´s awareness of what is considered morally correct behaviour MGM tries to change the film company´s image and forces its gay actors to get married. Billy refuses to do so and loses his job.
It is Joan again who reminds Jimmy and Billy of their other talent: having decorated their home splendidly which they are much admired for.
But their success does not only bring comfort and admiration from others…….
